The collection of teachers at Private Yoga have attained a depth of knowledge and experience that makes them exclusive to Brisbane. They understand that empathy, discretion and attention is needed when students start or further a yoga practice. Each teacher delivers from a deep well of understanding in physiology, kinetics and anatomy, ensuring you feel at ease on the mat. Whether you wish to lose weight, gain flexibility, recover from injury or illness or just find some 'me' time in your hectic schedule, our teachers will nurture that journey with respect and care.
Director & Teacher - Mandy Shearn
Eighteen years ago Mandy chanced upon a yoga class and it changed her life. Not immediately, it was slow & considered... a meandering journey of self discovery. As she observed her body grow strong and flexible, the physical transformation became secondary to the personal metamorphosis. Mandy's stresses drifted away each time she came to practice, then this process moved off the mat and into her everyday life. Her hyperactivity and anxiety levels decreased and she found a deep sense of calm, concentration and inner peace. Mandy surrendered her successful corporate career seven years ago in order to share her passion for this ancient science and philosophy and undertakes training on a yearly basis to further educate herself, ensuring her students learn from a safe, solid foundation of alignment and self awareness. "Sometimes we need to get out of our thoughts and remember to play. To fall over, get back up and keep moving, like we did when fearless as a child. If we never challenge ourselves, nothing will ever change."
Teacher - Lenell Armstrong
Lenells’ ‘flowing style’ combines principles learned from her dancing background, along with 15 years of yoga practice, her own philosophy and life experience. It is important to Lenell to share skills, educate, help others enhance their own practice and enjoy the healing balance of mind and body through yoga and meditation. Lenell travels to continue her own education on the amazing structural diversity between bodies and to pass this understanding into her teaching. "My ambition is to help people feel better within themselves and to see smiles on their faces." Like many, Lenell came to yoga for different reasons and found so much more. Like the promise she made to her Grandma as a young child, Lenell's motivation is to demonstrate her care for others through service.
Teacher - Ric Stafford-Smith
Ric initially began his yoga journey six years ago on the recommendation of a friend. Before long he was practicing everyday. What resonated was the fusion of physical movement balanced with the mental and emotional connection required to complete a practice. It was unlike any other form of physical activity he'd ever experienced & Ric now teaches yoga full time. His classes embrace all body types, fitness levels and abilities and his intention is to empower and inspire all students. Expect to challenge yourself whilst remaining mindful and present, experiencing complete self awareness and self acceptance. Ric says "Yoga isn’t just about movement, alignment or creating shapes with our bodies. It’s about developing new skills, about opening our heart, about being comfortable with feelings of discomfort, knowing it’s not permanent. It’s about being brave and finding peace, clarity and stillness. I think when you can carry all these things off your mat and apply these simple concepts into your daily life, it not only deepens your yoga practice but gives us a greater courage, empowerment, self acceptance and resilience."
Teacher & Naturopath - Julia Furness
Further to her work as a Naturopath and Holistic Healer, Julia is a Yoga teacher. Julia fell in love with yoga 4 years ago when she began taking hot yoga classes in her home town Melbourne. In the beginning, Julia used yoga as exercise, however over time she began to understand the true power of the practice in maintaining equilibrium between mind, body and spirit. Yoga was a life changer for Julia, and it wasn't long before she knew that she wanted to facilitate others through their yoga journey. In January 2016, Julia travelled to Goa, India to complete her 200hr yoga teacher training with Trimurti Yoga School and teaches vinyasa flow, Hatha flow and Ashtanga. Julia brings to her yoga classes mindfulness through movement, asking her students to come to class with acceptance of where they are today and where they may be tomorrow. She aims to deliver a unique yoga experience for every student, every time they step on their mat, often asking students to go inwards, cultivating a feeling or emotion rather than focusing solely on the physical asana practice.
Teacher - Grace Teale
Yoga continued to appear in and out Grace's life ever since she was 16 years old. After her very first class in high school, Grace decided yoga was definitely not for her- too slow and too boring! Nothing about yoga appealed to her and if somebody had told her back then that she would be teaching yoga full time today, her high school self would not have believed it. But despite the initial boredom of her first yoga class, there was always something that kept drawing her back to the mat. After practicing consistently, Grace decided to delve deeper into her practice by completing her 200hr Yoga Teaching Training. The experience was what Grace needed to solidify her love for asanas (yoga postures) and a new found love for meditation.
These days, Grace spends her time with her young family, teaching yoga, blogging and devoting time to her own personal practice. Her classes are challenging, fun, dynamic and students always leave with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of inner peace. Grace truly believes that when you practice yoga, you can change your world for the better!

Teacher - Allana Grant
Allana was introduced to yoga at a very young age by her mother, also a yoga teacher. It wasn’t until she was in her 20’s that she began to practice regularly and fell in love with yoga and the feeling of connection she enjoyed after each class. Her passion over the last 20 years of practicing led to the natural next step of becoming a yoga teacher and empowering others. Yoga to Allana is a way of life, living with awareness and intention. She is driven by the feelings of being completely connected to herself, with others and a balanced steadiness in this world.
